Feliz Cumpleanos from Dorie’s Promise! It’s that time of the month again, the time when we celebrate our birthday kids! We’re excited to share a little update about each of August’s birthday kids!
In August, we celebrated four special kids—Efrain, Elizabeth, Lester, and Nayeli.
🎂 Efrain
Efrain holds a special place in our hearts and our home. Not long ago, we shared a special update about Efrain on our blog. Although his medical conditions are serious and will not likely improve dramatically, his joy is contagious. It’s amazing to watch his influence on all of our children. Because he relies on our Special Mothers, Efrain spends much of his time with our younger children who also need more care. Watching our toddlers connect with him is amazing. They “play” with Efrain and often help push his wheelchair on walks. Sometimes, they even know what Efrain needs before the Special Mothers because they share such a close bond. Having Efrain with us is one of the best gifts we’ve ever received.

🎂 Elizabeth
Elizabeth and her big sister Jimena have been foster children in our home for the last 3 years. Dorie’s Promise wouldn’t be the same without Elizabeth’s giggles and big smile. The quintessential preschooler, Elizabeth loves games and crafts—painting, drawing, singing, and silly games. She’s an artist and entertainer at heart, always looking for friends to play with or an audience to make laugh. In January, she started preschool. So far she loves her teachers, both at school before the shutdown and at home with Miss Jenny, and doing homework. Elizabeth fits perfectly into our home with the other little girls her age—Sofia, Ailyn, Estella, Daniela, and Dulce. “Together they are the sweetest and greatest team at home,” according to our staff.

🎂 Lester
Thinking back, we remember Lester as a little boy who needed a lot of attention. He had trouble communicating and trusting people. In the last few years, Lester has found his voice and a deep love for people. Finding a school with great teachers who specialize in children with delays and different learning styles made a huge difference. Plus, as his communication improved we were able to understand his needs even better. Now, Lester is one of the most loving and outgoing kids in our home. He’s helpful to everyone, welcoming, and especially attuned to those needing a friend. During the shutdown, Lester found a renewed interest in board games, action figures, and seemingly endless games of soccer. He loves us well.

🎂 Nayeli
As a toddler, Nayeli was a quiet little girl with the most beautiful curls. She was cautious, curious, and fiercely loyal to those she trusted. Watching her grow into a confident young woman has been such a pleasure. Today, she’s a quiet, but sometimes not too quiet, leader in our home and a friend to everyone. If the boys are playing an intense game of soccer, she’s right in the mix. When the dining room table is covered in board games, Nayeli is on the bench with pieces in hand, especially if the Special Mothers are playing as well. We’re so thankful for her generous heart and the way she cares for others.
