At Dorie’s Promise, change is a constant, just like it is in every part of life. With each new year, we experience transitions, growth, and new challenges. Recently, one of the noticeable changes at our home has been an increase in short-term stays. These are children who stay with us for just a few months or, at times, a little over a year. So, why are we seeing this change? Let’s take a closer look.

Why Are Short-Term Stays on the Rise?
Over the years, Dorie’s Promise has been blessed with the opportunity to care for a growing number of young children, especially those between the ages of 0 and 7. During these early years, a child’s legal situation can change frequently. Often, a judge will set specific requirements that the child’s biological family must meet in order to create a safer and more stable environment for the child to return home. If those requirements are fulfilled, the child may be reunited with their family.
As a result, children in this age group are more likely to experience shorter stays at Dorie’s Promise as their legal situations evolve. On the other hand, as children grow older, their legal status tends to stabilize, meaning longer-term stays become more common.
Why Do Children Leave Dorie’s Promise?
While it is always hard to say goodbye, we understand that children come to Dorie’s Promise for a reason, and their time with us is part of a larger journey. The most common reasons children leave our care include:
- Reunification with Biological Family: After fulfilling court-ordered requirements, many children are able to return to their biological families, where they can continue to grow and thrive in a familiar environment.
- Legal Logistics: Sometimes, a judge may determine that a child should be moved to a home closer to their place of origin or to reunite with siblings who may be placed in another children’s home.
- Adoption: Although less frequent, adoption is another pathway for children who have completed their legal proceedings with their biological parents. This provides a permanent, loving family for children who are ready for that next step.

Coping with Change: Emotional Support for Children and Caregivers
For the children who come to Dorie’s Promise, saying goodbye to friends and caregivers is never easy. They form strong emotional bonds during their time with us, and those connections can make transitions difficult. We recognize that both young children and teenagers struggle with feelings of loss, especially when they feel they have no control over their legal status or how long they will stay.
Our team provides emotional support to help each child process these feelings, tailoring our approach to suit their age and emotional needs. We also know that our Special Mothers—who form deep, maternal connections with every child—experience grief as well. That’s why we offer emotional care workshops for them, ensuring they have the support they need during these transitions.
The Importance of Adapting to Each Child’s Needs
The fluid nature of our work means that our staff is always adjusting to care for a new group of children, each with their own unique backgrounds, needs, and challenges. We are committed to offering the best possible care, no matter how long or short their stay may be.
For the younger children who often transition out of our care, we focus on strengthening their physical health. This includes addressing any nutritional concerns and other medical needs. We also emphasize academic development, as traditional education may not always meet the specific needs of these children. When they leave our home, we want them to enter the world with greater expectations for themselves and a deeper understanding of their own potential.

Planting Seeds of Hope and Faith
At Dorie’s Promise, we are not just concerned with meeting physical and educational needs; we also want to nurture the emotional and spiritual well-being of each child. Our greatest joy is seeing children happy, full of hope, and empowered by the love and support they receive while in our care. We are dedicated to planting seeds of passion within them, encouraging them to pursue their dreams and know their worth.
We also strive to introduce them to the love of Jesus Christ, ensuring that they understand how deeply they are loved, not just by us, but by a Heavenly Father who cares for them always.
A Family for Life
Whether their stay is short or long, every child who comes through the doors of Dorie’s Promise becomes part of our family. We are committed to providing a safe, loving, and supportive environment where they can heal, grow, and prepare for whatever the future holds. No matter where life takes them, they will always have a place to call home here at Dorie’s Promise—a family for life.
