Fridays they can’t wait for

What started as an idea has become one of the most meaningful parts of the week for our children and teens

When we moved our children into the ISEA educational program, our founder, Heather, recognized something important. While a strong education matters, our children also need opportunities to explore, stay active, and simply enjoy being kids. That’s why Sports Fridays became part of their weekly routine.

From Monday through Thursday, the children focus on their schoolwork. They know that if they work hard during the week, Friday is waiting for them, a morning filled with sports and time outdoors.Every Friday, they wake up early, grab a snack for their break, and head to Campo Marte, one of Guatemala City’s largest public sports and recreation parks. By 8:00 a.m., they’re ready to spend the morning learning new skills, building friendships, and doing what they love.

The younger children rotate through physical education, basketball, and soccer, with opportunities to try baseball or tennis throughout the year. For many of our teens, though, soccer is the highlight of the week.

The program is led by dedicated coaches from Campo Marte. Hugo coaches basketball, Pablo teaches soccer, and Santiago, a member of our psychology team, leads physical education. Together, they create a safe and encouraging environment where our children can learn, grow, and have fun.

Coach Hugo has spent years working with children and believes opportunities like these are more important than ever. “I work with children and teenagers all the time, and it’s becoming harder because so much of their day revolves around cell phones, tablets, and school. Kids don’t have as many opportunities to be active anymore. That’s why we’re happy to be here. We’re grateful for the chance to support these children in any way we can.”

When we asked our children what they enjoy most about Fridays, the answer was almost always the same. “Playing soccer!” Pablo smiled as he shared that it’s his favorite sport because he dreams of becoming a professional soccer player one day.

Coach Pablo loves seeing that excitement every week. “The kids love playing soccer. They always arrive with great attitudes and big smiles. That’s what I enjoy most about coaching them.”

Watching our children run across the field, cheer for one another, and celebrate small victories reminds us that these Fridays are about much more than sports. They’re building confidence, learning teamwork, developing discipline, and discovering abilities they may never have known they had.

We’re grateful for the wisdom God has given our team to create opportunities like these, and we’re deeply grateful for you. Because of your support, our children have transportation to and from Campo Marte, snacks to keep them energized throughout the morning, and the chance to participate in a program they eagerly look forward to every week. Thank you for investing in our children and teens. Your generosity gives them the opportunity to grow, stay active, dream big, and enjoy the simple joy of being children.
