In Guatemala, Semana Santa (Holy Week) is one of the most meaningful weeks of the year—rich in both cultural heritage and deep spiritual significance. It’s a time when families across the country pause their daily routines to reflect on the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. For us at Dorie’s Promise, this season holds special importance as we help our children grow not only physically and emotionally, but also in their walk of faith.
Throughout the week, our home is filled with quiet moments of reflection and joyful celebrations. We honor the truth of the Gospel in ways our children can understand and embrace, weaving faith into every part of the week’s activities. It’s one of the most beautiful times of the year to be at Dorie’s Promise.
Reflecting on the Life of Jesus
Helping our children understand the meaning of Easter starts with sharing the story of Jesus in ways that speak to their hearts. For our older children, we watched an episode of The Chosen, a powerful drama series that brings Jesus’ life to the screen through the eyes of His disciples and others who encountered Him. The children were captivated—some moved to tears, others filled with questions and wonder.
For our younger ones, we screened animated films about the life and ministry of Jesus, giving them an age-appropriate introduction to His love and sacrifice. Our Special Mothers also led daily devotionals that explained why Jesus gave His life for us and how His resurrection brings hope. These moments were gentle, thoughtful, and filled with the assurance that each child is deeply loved by their Creator.

Kicking Off Summer with Joy
Holy Week also brings a break from school, so we embraced the opportunity to celebrate with sunshine and laughter. Our little ones in House 1 kicked things off with a fun and colorful summer fashion show. The girls wore bright Hawaiian-style skirts and flower necklaces, twirling confidently and striking their best poses. They lit up with joy, proud to be seen and celebrated.
Meanwhile, the boys showed off their creativity with outrageous hairstyles—some featuring tiny plastic frogs, others with shark fins made from colored gel. Their wild looks had everyone laughing, and the playful energy set the tone for a week full of joy. Moments like these remind us that healing and growth happen not only through structure, but also through carefree play and celebration.
Splashing into the Week’s Favorite Activity
Of all the activities we planned, pool time was by far the most anticipated. The sun was hot, the laughter was loud, and the joy was unmistakable. Thanks to perfect timing, our inflatable pools arrived just before the week began, and every age group got to take turns enjoying the cool water. Splashing in the garden, the children’s laughter echoed throughout the home.
For many of our kids, pool time feels like the ultimate freedom—the chance to simply be children, safe and happy in the sun. Some floated peacefully, others played games or had splash contests with their friends. After several months of school routines and responsibilities, this simple pleasure brought a sense of release and delight that we were so grateful to give them.

Games, Laughter, and Community Meals
As the week continued, our Special Mothers organized an incredible summer rally packed with interactive games. The backyard was transformed into a playful course of relay races, water balloon tosses, ring tosses, and even a kiddie pool filled with toy fish. There were sponge bucket relays, bowling games, and bubbles floating in the air. The kids ran from one station to the next, grinning ear to ear.
What made the rally even more special was the sense of unity. Older children helped their younger siblings, the Special Mothers cheered everyone on, and even a few staff members joined in the games. Afterward, we gathered under the pergola for a special lunch—hot dogs, grilled Guatemalan-style meat, fresh chirmol (tomato salsa), black beans, and corn on the cob. The older kids helped prep and serve the food, making the meal a beautiful picture of shared responsibility and joy.
A Week to Remember
This Semana Santa felt especially meaningful because, for the first time in a while, the children were able to fully enjoy our outdoor garden space again. Last year, repairs prevented us from hosting large group activities there—but this year, it became the heart of our celebration. Seeing the children run, laugh, and relax in this beautiful space reminded us of just how important it is to give them opportunities to simply be kids.
We are incredibly grateful to every person who made this week possible—from our faithful supporters to the dedicated team here at Dorie’s Promise. Through their efforts and love, our children experienced a Holy Week filled with spiritual growth, joyful play, and unforgettable memories. This was more than just a break from school—it was a celebration of life, love, and the powerful hope we find in Christ.
