Helping our special moms find balance, support and growth
We know how important it is to care for the women who care for our children. That’s why each month we provide training opportunities that equip our special moms with tools to better support the children in our home.
A few months ago, we were blessed with a new opportunity when Yohana, a psychologist, reached out and offered to volunteer a program she had created specifically for mothers. From the beginning, Alejandra, our director, knew it would be a great fit. “These spaces are so important because our moms aren’t only carrying the challenges they face here. Many of them also come with worries from home. Sometimes they’re concerned about a sick child, trying to find someone to care for their children, or dealing with other responsibilities before they even arrive. Taking all of that and then trying to focus isn’t always easy. That’s why we want to create spaces where they can find balance, feel supported, and release some of that burden.”
Yohana brings 16 years of experience in therapeutic work, with a focus on emotional regulation and healthy relationships. Her seven week program helps participants understand their emotions, learn practical tools, and strengthen the way they connect with the children in their care. The goal is simple: help our special moms become less reactive, build deeper relationships, and feel more confident as caregivers.
When asked what inspired the program, Yohana shared: “My own experience as a mother taught me something very important. When I learned how to regulate my nervous system and became calmer, I was able to support my son in a better way. I realized that if this had been valuable for me and for the families I work with, it could also help other caregivers. The program begins by focusing on emotional regulation. Then we look at each person’s story and experiences, because many times what we lived through as children affects how we care for our children today. The goal is to bring healing to those experiences and help special mothers care for children in a more complete and healthy way. To care well for a child, the caregiver also needs to learn how to care for herself.”
The response from our special moms has been encouraging. When we asked mama Silvia what she liked most about the workshops, she said: “It’s been really good because it gives us tools to communicate better with the children. It helps us improve how we interact with them each day and apply the tools we’re learning.”
Yohana has also been encouraged by the group. She shared that one of the things she appreciates most is seeing the special moms recognize areas where they want to grow and then actively put what they’re learning into practice.
We’re grateful to God for opportunities like this. By giving to the women who care for our children every day, we’re helping create stronger relationships, healthier emotions, and changing the stories of the children we serve.
