What to pack – Personal

Documents/Money

  • Airline ticket
  • Passport
  • Photocopy of your passport
  • Health insurance card
  • Driver’s license
  • Souvenir spending money ($75-100 recommended)

Clothing

  • One nice outfit for church – pants are fine for women
  • Jeans/long pants
  • Shorts (knee-length or longer)
  • Tank tops
  • T-shirts
  • Hat
  • Sweatshirt, sweater, or jacket (sometimes it is chilly in the evening)
  • Tennis shoes – a must (to be used in communities)
  • Sandals
  • Flip-flops (for the bathroom/shower)
  • Undergarments and socks (enough for the time you are in Guatemala)
  • Pajamas
  • Mosquito repellent

Hygiene

  • Hairbrush/comb, shampoo, conditioner, etc.
  • Toothpaste, toothbrush, dental floss, toothpicks
  • Razor/shaver, disinfectant bar soap, deodorant
  • Hand wipes and/or sanitizer (carry around with you to combat germs)
  • Lotion/chapstick
  • Suntan lotion/sunscreen
  • Earplugs

Medicine

Please come prepared with:

  • Pain reliever
  • Cold and allergy medicine
  • Pepto Bismol
  • Tums
  • Dramamine (if needed for plane ride)
  • Prescription medications (please pack in your carry on)

Miscellaneous

  • Bible, pen, journal
  • Camera, film, batteries (Note: disposable cameras are hard to find in Guatemala)
  • Video camera/battery/charger/tapes
  • Backpack or fanny pack for stashing camera, snacks, hand sanitizer, etc.
  • Water bottle
  • Small flashlight and batteries for reading and for getting around at night
  • Inexpensive watch/alarm to use
  • Rain jacket – it rains each afternoon in rainy season (May-October)
  • Spanish/English dictionary for reference and practice
  • Pictures of your family (the children love to see pictures)
